Where Vokara actually sits
Vokara, VoiceInk, and MacWhisper share the same core privacy posture.
Local by default, cloud strictly opt-in, nothing bundled in. Within that group, Vokara is the one whose sign-in never handles a plaintext API key. OpenRouter’s PKCE flow stores the credential directly in your OS keychain, where the others have you paste a key into a settings field.
TAWK is more absolute than any of us.
It has no cloud path at all, ever, which is a stronger privacy guarantee than "optional," full stop. The tradeoff is that TAWK can never offer AI polish, even to someone who’d want it later. Vokara gives you TAWK’s default posture with a door you can open if you choose to.
Superwhisper and Voibe are more turnkey, not more private.
Both bundle a cloud option directly into what you’re already paying for, so there’s no separate account to set up. But that convenience comes from the cloud step being built in, not from being more private than the local-by-default group.
Wispr Flow and Aqua Voice solve a different problem.
Both require the cloud for every transcription, with no offline mode. If local processing is a requirement rather than a preference, neither fits, regardless of price.
Frequently asked questions
Yes. Vokara transcribes 100% on-device by default. AI polish is a separate, opt-in step. If you never connect an OpenRouter account, none of your dictation, audio or text, ever leaves your machine. (Vokara does contact its own servers for license checks and app updates, never with your words.)
It doesn’t ask for one to copy and paste. Vokara authenticates through OpenRouter’s OAuth (PKCE) sign-in flow, the same category of secure login used for "Sign in with Google" style authentication, so there’s no plaintext key sitting in a settings file.
TAWK is the most absolute: it has no cloud code path, period. VoiceInk and MacWhisper are local by default with an optional cloud step, same as Vokara.
